Minister Prentice Highlights the Environment in 2010 Budget
OTTAWA, Ont. -- March 4, 2010 -- Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks, Jim Prentice, said today that the 2010 Budget underscores the Government’s ongoing determination to protect Canada’s environment and to establish this country as a clean energy superpower.
“At a time of overall fiscal restraint, the commitment of resources to support new environmental programs and to sustain existing ones, is greatly encouraging,” he said. “Budget 2010 includes new measures totalling $190 million to support a cleaner, more sustainable environment. These investments further reinforce our strategy of transforming Canada into the world’s leading source of reliable, responsible energy.”
Among the highlights of Budget 2010:
•The establishment of a $100 million Next Generation Renewable Power Initiative will support investment in advanced clean technology in the forestry sector, making it more sustainable and competitive.
