The Hoosier National Forest (USDA – Forest Service) will in the near future be advertising to fill a permanent full-time Soil Scientist, GS-0470-9/11 position within our Ecosystem Management organization. The Position will be filled at the GS-09 or 11 level and only one position is being filled. The annual salary ranges from $47,448 to $74,628.


Duties of the position involve serving as a soil scientist as part of an integrated Ecosystems Management team. The incumbent will provide soils and wetland input into integrated project planning and NEPA documentation (specialist reports) and manage the resulting soil and water improvement portions of these projects. The incumbent would work with other forest staff specialists in engineering, recreation, fire, timber and wildlife to insure that the soil and water resources are protected. The position will be based in Bedford, IN.

The position will be advertised both merit promotion for those having career status with a federal government agency and Demo for those who do not have career status with a federal government agency.


Office of Personnel Management Qualifications: Complete qualification requirements for this position can be found in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, which is available from any Federal Government Personnel Office and OPM on their web site (www.opm.gov/qualifications/index.htm).


One year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service is qualifying for the GS-11 grade level. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA’s) to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Graduate education or an internship can also be used to meets the specialized experience required, but only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.
