Sharp Corp. has announced the launch of its first solar powered handset, the Solar Hybrid SH6230C, in China in a move that is seen as an effort to bolster the company's reputation as a "green company". Earlier too many of Sharp's competitors have launched eco-friendly devices that boasted of low power chargers, fully recyclable raw materials and less use of plastics in them. A solar powered device, however, is a rarity. Samsung seems to be the only mainstream manufacturer who has a solar powered handset in its line-up as of now.
As for the phone, the Solar Hybrid SH6230C will be the company's first solar-powered mobile for overseas markets. It will be introduced in China followed by a global launch later this year. The feature list includes a 2.9-inch LCD screen and a very competent 5-megapixel autofocus camera. The Chinese market will also get two variants of the phone, the SH6220C and SH6228C, which will include Memory LCD technology that is a low power consuming technology that also offers better viewability in sunlight.
This phone will be available in China in the months to come. Sharp has neither revealed the pricing or the launch dates of this phone yet.
